Jake Lloyd best known for his role as Anakin Skywalker in the 1999 film Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, the first film in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, was found dead at his Indianapolis, Indiana home this afternoon. Lloyd was on 26 years old.
Police responded to the Indianapolis home after receiving a wellness check request by concerned family members who say they haven’t heard from Lloyd in multiple days. Upon entering the residence, police found Lloyd’s deceased body in his bed.
Little information is known at this time and police intend to investigate the cause of death.
“We found no reason to believe drugs and/or alcohol played a role in this young man’s death but due to his age we will perform a full investigation”
“We found Mr. Lloyd in his bedroom deceased around 2:30 pm today,” said Indianapolis Police Chief James J. Freda in a brief statement to Local 13 CBS News.
“We found no reason to believe drugs and/or alcohol played a role in this young man’s death but due to his age we will perform a full investigation.”
A source close to the family also confirmed Lloyd’s death.
Lloyd, born March 5, 1989 in Fort Collins, Colorado, began his career playing Jimmy Sweet in 4 episodes of ER, playing other various roles for three years before he was chosen by George Lucas to play the young Anakin Skywalker.
Lloyd retired from acting in 2001, citing bullying on the part of classmates and the stress of doing up to 60 interviews a day as his reasons for doing so.
In June, Lloyd was arrested for reckless driving, driving without a license, and resisting arrest. According to Lloyd’s mother, the incident occurred because Lloyd forgot to take medication for his schizophrenia.
Jake Lloyd joins a long list of young great actors gone too soon. RIP.
